Kendall Thomas had a performance that’s starting to become normal, and the Stony Point defense shut down Vista Ridge in the second half to help the Tigers get one step closer to the playoffs.

The senior running back rushed for four touchdowns and 276 yards, while the Tigers’ defense shut out the Rangers’ high-flying offense in the second half to help Stony Point beat Vista Ridge 44-29 Friday night and stay unbeaten on the season.

“We play the game for four quarters, that’s what we try to be,” Stony Point head coach Craig Chessher said. “I know everybody says that, but we really try to do that. I thought our defense played lights out. I’ve got two early good coordinators that never panic even when I panic sometimes.”

Senior quarterback Kyle Overton finished 9-of-13 passing for 145 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Jaden Leonard caught a touchdown pass and Jaylon Stafford had one rushing touchdown.

The Stony Point defense had three interceptions, and junior defensive back Jabori Adkins came down with two of them.

“We were slow starting in the first half, and we weren’t executing,” Thomas said. “We tried to keep the same intensity because we knew it was going to open up eventually.”

Vista Ridge senior quarterback Kyle Brown completed 23 of 37 passes for 259 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Maximus Clark rushed for 13 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Bowerman caught two touchdowns while and Kwade Hegtvedt caught one touchdown for the Rangers.

“They were just too good up front down the stretch,” Vista Ridge head coach Rodney Vincent said. “The kids kept playing hard. We feel like we made some good adjustments defensively. They just executed better than us in the second half.”

Vista Ridge brought down the Stony Point punter in the end zone on the fourth play of the game, and Brown threw his first touchdown when his pass deflected off a Rangers’ receiver and into the arms of Bowerman.

Brown tossed two more touchdowns before the end of the first quarter. Stony point got on the scoreboard with a 19-yard pass from Overton to Jaden Leonard.

Thomas showed off his speed on the first play of the second quarter, sprinting 49 yards for a touchdown and Jaylon Stafford scored on an 8-yard run midway through the quarter.

Brown was called for intentional grounding in his own end zone for the second safety of the game to pull the Tigers within six points at the half.

It was all Tigers in the second half as they scored once in the third quarter and twice in the fourth to stay unbeaten and tied with Vandegrift atop the District 13-6A standings.

“We kind of came out flat, and (Vista Ridge) came out ready to go,” Chessher said. “We got a couple of big plays that kept us in the game. Proud of our kids for playing four quarters. It feels good to be 6-0.”

Stony Point takes on another high-powered offense when it faces off against Round Rock next Friday night at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex, while Vista Ridge has a huge game against Cedar Ridge at Dragon Stadium.

“Every game for us is a playoff game,” Vincent said. “This is a tough district we’re in. We’ll come out and play the best four quarters we’ve played all year against Cedar Ridge.”
